Reinventing Practice: Toward a Culture of Regeneration

Over the past few years, I’ve had the privilege of photographing and speaking with many of the most thoughtful practitioners shaping our built environment.

What began in 2020 as Architects in Practice, a portrait series for Architecture Today, has evolved into something larger and more urgent: a shared exploration of how architecture might serve life, not just commerce or capital.

In 2024, the series was reborn as Reinventing Practice, now dedicated to architects participating in the Regenerative Architecture Index, a collaboration between Architecture Today and UK Architects Declare.

The Index moves beyond traditional measures of success, beyond profit, growth, and awards, and asks instead: how do we restore, repair, and regenerate?

It is both an act of resistance and a gesture of hope; a collective attempt to redefine value through care, reciprocity, and imagination.

Just one year after its launch, the RAI has more than doubled in size, from 64 practices in 2024 to 116 today. These are architects, landscape architects, and engineers who are rethinking what it means to build in an age of planetary limits, and beginning to show, through real projects, that regenerative thinking can move from aspiration to action.

Through Reinventing Practice, I’m continuing to make portraits and gather words from those leading this change. Each image is a small act of belief, that architecture, at its best, is a cultural project, and that how we practice is as important as what we produce.

The dream is simple but profound: that we can create a culture in which future generations not only survive, but thrive.

This is not just a feature series, it is a movement, a living ecosystem of people determined to make a better world through design, collaboration, and shared intent.
