It was a particular pleasure to photograph 1 Broadgate, another award-winning building by AHMM and a project that rewards careful looking.
The building operates at an unusually demanding urban scale, yet its architecture is understood most clearly through movement: the opening of the ground plane, the retail passages drawn through the mass, the terraces stepping back above the City, and the gradual modulation of colour across the façade. What could have been a singular commercial object is instead composed as a sequence of edges, thresholds and inhabited volumes, closely attuned to Broadgate Circle, Finsbury Avenue Square and the daily intensity of Liverpool Street.
Photography offers the privilege of spending sustained time with a building, watching how its intentions survive contact with weather, occupation and the changing light of the city. At 1 Broadgate, the architecture continually shifted between the civic and the intimate: monumental in its presence, but precise in its handling of detail, depth and human scale.
Its recognition as the 2026 City of London Building of the Year feels entirely deserved. Congratulations to AHMM, British Land, GIC, Sir Robert McAlpine and the wider project team. It was a pleasure to contribute to the visual record of another significant AHMM building.
